Grand . Thunderstorms: large cities relatively spared, neighboring villages much less so

The large towns of the Creilloise conurbation (apart from Montataire) were relatively spared by the storm deluge that occurred on the night of May 1st to 2nd. But surrounding communities were more impacted.

A strip with a width of a few hundred meters passed from north to south affecting both Montataire and Cires-lès-Mello via Saint-Leu-d’Esserent and Villers-sous-Saint-Leu without forgetting Mouy, Maysel and so many others, Hailstones as big as small gallinaceous eggs devastated the gardens and small shelters. Paradoxically, unlike the hailstorm 25 years ago, on May 25, 2009 in Liancourtois, or the torrential rains of Valdampierre in 2015, the roofs were not too destroyed. In Montataire, it was more for flooding of cellars that the firefighters had to intervene for a good part of the night.

and plateaus in heights

Rising water levels are responsible for this, particularly in municipalities crossed by a river, such as Montataire with the Thérain which also crosses Mouy.

The residents didn’t see it coming. “We were in bed when it happened,” confides victim. Cellars, where there are often freezers or electrical appliances, are affected.

Awaiting declaration of natural disaster

Everything is thrown away for many of them, living near the waterways. By capillary action, the water penetrated into the smallest gaps in their homes. These residents are impatiently waiting for the mayors to request a state of natural disaster.

Other municipalities, such as Villers-sous-Saint-Leu or Saint-Leu-d’Esserent, Maysel and Cramoisy or even Cires-les-Mélo, were affected by another phenomenon, that of mudslides. .

Many impassable streets

In Saint-Leu-d’Esserent for example, the mudslide increased in size coming from the cultivated plateaus. The land was plowed recently. The downpours quickly gullyed, notably via rue d’Hardillière to flow into the main street, the D 92, forcing the closure of the latter and the establishment of a diversion.

The department’s road services and the technical services of the towns and municipalities were on deck from the early hours of the morning to clean and make the road network accessible. One of the most affected municipalities was Cires-les-Mélo with numerous mudslides in the streets of the municipality. Some roads subsided following this flood.

Now is the time to quantify the damage.

In Saint-Leu-d’Esserent, rue d’Hardillière was transformed in the space of an instant into a torrent of mud.
The road services did their best. The work was tough.
Another municipality affected, Cires-les-Méllo and its Couture district.
it is rare to see a torrent in the heart of Montataire.
