More than 3,400 lightning strikes recorded: Yonne, second most struck department evening

May 1, the Yonne department was heavily affected by violent storms. Heavy rainfall and impressive hailstorms caused damage to the vines. Electrical activity was also significant, particularly in Saint-Florentin, Chablis and Venizy.

Météo had placed the Yonne department on orange alert in the face of the risk of thunderstorms on Wednesday May 1st. Heavy and hail mixed with significant electrical activity.

The day after this impressive stormy episode, Yonne would be the second department in France most affected by lightning strikes, according to the Keraunos website, specializing in the meteorology of violent storms. It is in Seine-et- that the number of impacts recorded is the greatest (4100). In Yonne, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., a total of 3,418 lightning strikes were recorded, with a peak of activity around 8 p.m.

Among the most affected sectors: Saint-Florentin, Chablis and Venizy. In these municipalities, the number of lightning strikes is between 123 and 162.
