Fire at the Ary Payet school: the criminal trail considered

In Saint-André, a ravaged part of the facade of the Ary Payet this Thursday, May 2, around 3 a.m. School is closed until tomorrow and the start of the holidays. In a press release, the municipality indicates that it could be a fire of arson.

A fire broke out during the night of to Thursday, May 2 last night, around 3 a.m., at the Ary Payet school which is located in the Cressonnière district, in Saint-André.

This morning, the establishment remained closed and it will remain closed tomorrow, Friday, the eve of the school holidays. “The damage shows that it was complicated to welcome the children this morning. We still have smoke fumes“, indicates Laurent Papaya, the deputy mayor responsible for school affairs

In a press release sent at the end of the morning, the municipality of Saint-André indicates that assessments are underway to try to establish the origin of the disaster which could have been caused voluntarily.

Initial observations suggest that it was a fire of arson“, it is thus specified. “Mayor Joé Bédier deplores that the school, a sanctuary space of the Republic, is the victim of
this type of act of vandalism“.

The town hall reminds us that the Ary Payet school is a so-called HQE school, for High Environmental Quality. In 2023, it was renovated during the first phase of rehabilitation work on the town’s schools for an amount of more than 1.2 million euros. “The community will carry out the necessary work on the school for a rapid resumption of classes for the children“.
