How to establish a sustainable development model in French women’s sport? The equation is not easy to solve but on the side of Brest Bretagne Handball, current leader of the Butagaz Energie League, we were able to align all the planets to initiate a solid commercial growth strategy. During an interview with Ecofoot.fr, Marine Toullec and Antony Messager, respectively Sales & CSR Manager and Partnership & Ticketing Manager, discuss the main pillars of the BBH’s partnership development strategy.

What share do private partnerships (sponsorship + B2B ticketing) represent in the Brest Bretagne Handball budget? Does this share tend to increase from year to year?

Brest Bretagne Handball is 90% financed by private funds. We are recording good growth year after year in turnover. We are now very well staffed within our sales team with optimal functioning.

The objective is obviously to always increase our turnover. However, in terms of quota, it will be difficult to go much higher. Private partnerships already represent a very significant weight in our model.

How many partners does Brest Bretagne Handball bring together each year?

There are now around 500 partners per season. We crossed this symbolic threshold last year. We were rather around 450 partners coming out of the Covid-19 crisis. Despite this complicated period, many companies continued to support us. Then, we were able to resume our progress over the last two seasons.

Do your partners mainly come from the Brest metropolitan area? Are certain sectors of activity over-represented in your network?

We find all types of companies in our network. This ranges from small craftsmen/traders to large national brands. We offer a wide range of services that can satisfy everyone. Among the very well represented sectors, we find construction players.

To date, 90% of our partners come from northern Finistère. Our activity is essentially concentrated in the Brest metropolitan area but we have a few partners who come from a little further afield.

What are the main arguments put forward to convince partners to join forces with Brest Bretagne Handball?

Good sports results help a lot. However, to develop activities, we are well aware that we must go beyond the results on the ground. In our venue, the Brest Arena, we are fortunate to benefit from 10 reception rooms. There are around 1,200 VIP spectators per match. Companies that join us therefore have access to many decision-makers in the region. Additionally, we have grown our non-match day events well in recent years. This offers great opportunities to expand your network.

The visibility aspect should not be neglected either. We welcome an average of 3,800 spectators per home match. Our meetings are broadcast on BeIN Sports, Tébéo or Eurosport. The BBH is the 3rd most publicized French women’s club behind Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais (D1 Arkema).

Joining a women’s club becomes a strong argument. The women’s sport dimension is increasingly valued in sponsorship strategies. Companies are concerned about issues of parity, equal pay between men and women and the place of women in the world of entrepreneurship. Sponsoring the region’s flagship women’s club is a good way to underline its commitment to such issues.

Finally, we are fortunate to be able to count on the excellent results of our national team. French women’s handball shines internationally, like the World Cup won in 2023. This helps us capture the attention of companies.
