A violent fire broke out on Wednesday evening, shortly after 10:30 p.m., in the port of Saint-Laurent-du-Var (Alpes-Maritimes). The mobilization of 67 firefighters and no less than 34 engines was necessary during the intervention to put an end to the disaster. Although no casualties were reported, the flames still ravaged five yachts of 10 to 15 meters and damaged two other vessels located nearby. “The operation continued most of the night and ended a little after 3 a.m.”indicated Thursday morning the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 06).
Access to the port was closed on Thursday, for an indefinite period, while the site was cleaned up. An investigation was also opened by the Grasse public prosecutor’s office to determine the nature of the fire, which at this stage remains unknown. One thing is certain, the damage amounts to several hundred thousand euros.
This is not the first time that a large fire has broken out at the port of the small Riviera seaside resort. At the end of 2020 and mid-April 2021, two fires affected eight restaurants on the Flots Bleus promenade, facing the port. Six had been completely destroyed.
