As the sunny days approach, the tiger mosquito returns, and the Loiret department is no exception.
The regional health agency (ARS) informed in a press release the opening, Wednesday May 1, 2024, of the season of “enhanced surveillance” of the insect. The tiger mosquito can transmit diseases such as chikungunya and dengue.
Between January 1 and March 26, 2024“1,038 cases of imported dengue fever were reported in mainland France, compared to 76 over the same period in 2023,” indicates the ARS.
Recognizable insect
The tiger mosquito is recognizable by its small size which is around 4 to 5 mm, but mainly due to its black and white stripes on the body and legs.
The year 2023 was marked by a notable increase in the presence of the tiger mosquito in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Although no new department has been colonized, the number of municipalities in which it is now present was multiplied by two between July and October.
The ARS calls on everyone’s responsibility to stop the expansion of the tiger mosquito.
