FC Sion lost 1-0 at FC Zurich on Sunday. The Valaisans gave in with just one goal, that of Gomez, in the first period.

Sion is now four consecutive games without a victory. This is probably not worrying, after the Valaisans’ successful start to the season. On the contrary, there is probably something a little more in keeping with their newly promoted status. Also, there will be the match against Yverdon last week which will be clearer to show the gap which separates the Sédunois from the teams at the bottom of the table.

You have to think that it exists. Because in Zurich, against this FCZ which is one of the best teams in the Super League at the start of the season, Sion was not unworthy. The only goal conceded came from a corner, in the 17th minute, when Mounir Chouiar placed the ball on the head of the imposing Mariano Gomez.

Zion did not remain passive in the face of this. On the contrary. Didier Tholot’s team tried to push, with its limits in offensive play. Anton Miranchuk, once again a starter, tried, without really creating the shift that could have changed everything. The Russian, however, shot wide (57th). But it was especially on long shots that Sion seemed to get closer to equalizing. We think of Marquinhos Cipriano’s attempt, then that of Baltazar, a few minutes later (81st), which was deflected onto the bar by Brecher. And how can we not mention Bouchlarhem’s volley in the 94th minute which also crashed into Brecher’s bar?

We can’t blame Sion for losing at Letzigrund. Especially with a performance like this. We should perhaps simply consider that the Valaisans are finding a place that probably suits them a little more.
