One year after a historic mobilization in the context of the fight against pension reform, the day of 1er May 2024 has found its “standards” of previous mobilizations in Alençon, on the occasion of Labor Day.

They were a little more than 250 demonstrators paraded through the streets of the Orne prefecture this Wednesday 1er May 2024, compared to nearly 2,000 people in 2023 and around 300 a year earlier.

Against the Government’s “austerity policy”

The mobilized unions this time placed emphasis on the “austerity policy” of the Government, which announced its intention tosave 10 billion euros in 2024 on state spending.

“The Government announces that it will make billions of euros in savings on social policies, public servicesthe ecological transition or by picking the pockets of the unemployed and unemployedof those who are sick, or by once again attacking the Labor Code,” indicated the activist who spoke on behalf of the Orne inter-union.

In the demonstrators’ sights in particular, “the new reform of unemployment insurance planned for July with a tightening of access conditions and a drop in compensation for workers deprived of employment”, “the increase in checks of the unemployed and the obligation to carry out 15 hours per week of “free work” for recipients of the RSA and beneficiaries of unemployment benefits”, or even “the new labor law planned for the start of the school year to provide ever more flexibility to companies to the detriment of employee rights.”

Increasing salaries and pensions: “an emergency”

Above all, according to the unions, these reforms take place in a complicated economic context for the French, because “theinflation has considerably impoverished employees.

“Precariousness and poverty are gaining ground, particularly among students. »

This is why, according to them, “there is an urgent need toincrease salariesscholarships, the Civil Service index point and pensions”.

They also denounce inequality in the distribution of wealth and demand more social justice.

“Far from “disempowering” the country (a formula used by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, editor’s note), the Government is continuing its policy at the service of the richest by distributing public money to private companies, particularly the largest, in the form of exemptions from social security contributions.

This policy is not a failure, it is a choice!

Against “austerity”, Sophie Kieffer, departmental secretary of the Teachers’ Union-UNSA, denounces in particular “the restrictions on national education budget from the next school year.”

“For National Education alone, there are 700 million euros in savings out of the 10 billion planned,” reports the unionist.

Less budget means a significant risk of job cuts in schools.

A contradiction, according to her, while the Government wants to carry out the so-called “Shock of knowledge” reform, in particular by setting up level groups in middle school.

Particularly mobilized against this reform within National Education, including the establishment of “Dead Schools and Colleges” days in Orne, teachers in the department are called to demonstrate again, Saturday May 25, 2024.

In Orne, the FO, CFDT, CFTC and CFE-CGC unions did not participate in this day of mobilization on 1er may.
