On this day of May 1, at the Jean-Gautherin cemetery then at the memorial stele along the canal, numerous tributes to Pierre Bérégovoy followed one another. 31 years ago, on May 1, 1993, the politician killed himself.

In his speech at the Jean Gautherin cemetery, Denis Thuriot, mayor of Nevers, retraced in a few words the career of Pierre Bérégovoy, great statesman, who was mayor of Nevers from 1983 to 1993, minister then prime minister (in April 1992, he was appointed 1st minister, the last socialist minister of François-Mitterrand).

Recollection on the commemorative stele

“Every May 1, we relive this day which remains a trauma for Nevers. On the evening of this tragic day, Nevers, Nièvre, the whole of , found themselves stunned.”

We remember Pierre Bérégovoy, his sense of commitment to his city and his country.

Several wreaths were placed in front of his grave. Before paying tribute to the commemorative stele erected at the place where Pierre Bérégovoy ended his life, tribute was also paid to Jean-Pierre Harris, 1st deputy of Pierre Bérégovoy, who died in May 2010.
