In his speech at the Jean Gautherin cemetery, Denis Thuriot, mayor of Nevers, retraced in a few words the career of Pierre Bérégovoy, great statesman, who was mayor of Nevers from 1983 to 1993, minister then prime minister (in April 1992, he was appointed 1st minister, the last socialist minister of François-Mitterrand).

“Every May 1, we relive this day which remains a trauma for Nevers. On the evening of this tragic day, Nevers, Nièvre, the whole of France, found themselves stunned.”

Several wreaths were placed in front of his grave. Before paying tribute to the commemorative stele erected at the place where Pierre Bérégovoy ended his life, tribute was also paid to Jean-Pierre Harris, 1st deputy of Pierre Bérégovoy, who died in May 2010.
