Young PLR demand the abolition of May 1st

“Year after year, the left and the unions march in the streets to celebrate May 1. While this causes some chaos, the very content of this celebration seems wrong. The Swiss Young Liberal-Radicals (JLR) demand the abolition of May 1 as a legal public holiday.

In a press release published on the occasion of Labor Day, the young people of the PLR demand that workers work rather than take to the streets.

Not everyone is in the same boat in Switzerland, because public holidays depend on the cantons. May 1 is an official public holiday in eight cantons: Basel, Jura, Neuchâtel, Schaffhausen, Ticino, Thurgau and Zurich. “However, given the ever-increasing restrictions on economic freedom, it is not time to celebrate,” note the JLR. On the other hand, this legal holiday causes a loss of prosperity.

Jonas Lüthy, new president of the JLR, declares: “The left cannot promote its political program at the expense of the community, which also provides a disservice to the working population.”

The JLR complain that the Swiss Trade Union Union can take advantage of May 1 to advertise the PS initiative, up for vote on June 9, which wants to reduce bonuses.

In conclusion, to improve the lot of workers, we must improve the lot of bosses: “To really contribute to improving the economic situation of workers, explain the JLR, it is time to reduce the burden of taxes and taxes. The framework conditions of the Swiss economic center must be improved and the entrepreneurial spirit must be encouraged.

Note that the Syna union is taking the opposite approach. He launched a petition to request that May 1 become a federal holiday, like August 1. According to various estimates, a public holiday costs the Swiss economy between 300 and 600 million francs.
