Images of meat carcasses left on the sidewalk published on social networks in recent days are striking. The 18th arrondissement town hall explains that a butcher’s shop was closed a few weeks ago.

Meat carcasses left on the sidewalk. Photos and videos taken by a collective of local residents called “La Vie Dejean”, widely shared over the last few days on social networks, point to hygiene failures in certain butcher shops in the north of the capital.

The cold chain has been completely forgotten, meat stored on the ground or in direct sunlight… There is no shortage of examples in these publications.

The butchers in question are located in the 18th arrondissement, more precisely at Rue Poulet, Rue Dejean and Rue Poissonniers – between the Château Rouge and Marcadet-Poissonniers metro stations. On these three streets, almost ten butcher shops are spread over a few hundred meters.

“Smells that don’t make you want to go through the door”

Inside one of them, employees do not appear to be aware of the images shared on social media.

Crossed in the neighborhood, residents of the area have relatively divided opinions on the problem. If there is no concern for Laurent, a local resident who assures BFM Paris Île-de-France that the butcher’s shop he frequents is “good and not expensive”, Pascale says for her part she has already seen ” meat outside” without knowing “how long it was left” outside in the open air. She is joined by Chloé, who explains that she has noticed “odors that don’t make you want to go through the door”.

One of the butchers photographed was temporarily closed a few weeks ago following a health check. It has since reopened, after complying with the rules in force.

“Just two weeks ago, the municipal police seized displays from businesses that were not complying with their authorizations, and we are ready, if necessary, to go further,” Kévin Havet assures BFM Paris Île-de-France, PS deputy to the mayor of the 18th arrondissement, in charge of security.

“I’ve never seen that”

“The municipal police have their record of fines in the Château Rouge district. With the mayor of the 18th arrondissement, we have given very clear instructions for the municipal police to intervene significantly, both in prevention but also in terms of sanctions “, explains the deputy in charge of security, Kévin Havet.

If these butcheries remain in the minority, the situation is no less “intolerable” according to Doctor Jean-Philippe Claude, director of the Vethyqua firm, specializing in food hygiene.

“I’ve been in this profession for 35 years, and I’ve never seen that. Fortunately, organisms like our bodies, our immune systems, manage to compensate for some of the shortcomings in the professional food chain,” analyzes Jean-Philippe Claude.

If there are any doubts about the freshness of your raw meat, you should remember to check that its color is not unusual, that its texture is not viscous and finally, obviously, that its smell is not putrid.
