Incendiary night in La Chaux-de-Fonds

Two fires woke up La Chaux-de-Fonds during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The first, around 3 a.m., concerned a vehicle parked on rue Numa-Droz. Once on scene, firefighters were quickly able to put out the burning car.

Then, shortly after 5 a.m., a release of smoke coming from the cellars of the buildings located at rue de la Serre 96 and 98 was announced. The firefighters were also able to contain the fire.

In a press release, the Neuchâtel Police and Public Prosecutor’s Office explained that twelve residents present in the buildings were evacuated and checked by the health service. Six of them were bothered by the smoke and had to be transferred to area hospitals for further checks.

These events required the involvement of the Neuchâtel mountains fire and rescue service, the various ambulance services of the canton, a member of the inspectorate of the Cantonal Insurance and Prevention Establishment (ECAP), civil protection as well as the intervention of the Neuchâtel gendarmerie and judicial police. A criminal investigation was opened by the duty prosecutor in order to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident.

For the moment, there is nothing to indicate that these fires are linked, according to law enforcement. The Police are calling on anyone who has witnessed unusual events in this area to contact them. /comm-cde
