Several thousand people march for May 1st

Published today at 12:16 p.m.

Several thousand people marched in Zurich on Wednesday for Labor Day, under the slogan “Capitalism makes you sick”. The procession took place peacefully. The police were present in force.

The rally ended on the Sechseläuten square, with a speech by Daniel Lampart, chief economist of the Swiss Trade Union (USS).

The official procession organized by the union umbrella aimed in particular to mobilize in favor of a “yes” to the initiative to reduce health premiums, put to a vote on June 9. However, many groups joined the demonstration, including this year a large “Palestine bloc”.

In the afternoon, many radical left-wing organizations called for an unauthorized demonstration, a gathering that usually ends in incidents and property damage.
