Once again absent this Monday, April 29 from the municipal council, Christophe Béchu, now first deputy mayor, should not receive all of his compensation according to the opposition.

Having become a minister almost two years ago, Christophe Béchu is also first deputy mayor of Angers. The Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, busy with his missions, is only rarely present in Angers, like yesterday evening during the last municipal council. A new absence which quite annoyed Silvia Camara-Tombini (PS) of the opposition group Aimer Angers.

She decided to speak in order to recall the internal regulations by citing article 21. The latter indicates in particular that compensation can be reduced if the elected representative does not participate sufficiently in plenary sessions and commissions.

“No one will have escaped the repeated absences of the city’s first deputy”

I would like you to enforce this article 21 because no one will have missed the repeated absences of the city’s first deputy. Since September 2022, twenty municipal councils have taken place. Christophe Béchu attended, sometimes very partially, five of them. In the town, we had twenty councils, only three of which were in his presence. Furthermore, the first deputy never participates in the commissions which make it possible to prepare the councils. “, denounced Silvia Camara-Tombini.

However, according to the former candidate for the municipal election, the first deputy “ benefited from all of the compensation corresponding to these two mandates, i.e. a net monthly total of €3,089.50, more than twice the minimum wage “. She asked the mayor of Angers, Jean-Marc Verchère, to enforce the internal regulations.

The role of Christophe Béchu is to apply a certain morality, which means that he would finally recognize that it is not conceivable to suggest that one can carry out his consistent ministry and the role of first deputy at the same time. », continued the elected official.

“I am happy to have a first deputy like him”

It’s quite easy and relatively inappropriate or derogatory. You can imagine that the role of the first deputy or the budget rapporteur for the agglomeration is not limited to attendance. The fact that our city can benefit from the presence of one of our own in government is no small matter. It is not only with his physical presence that his intervention for the City must be swept away. I am happy to have a first deputy like him, even if he is rarely present. Of course, this has drawbacks. Of course, the calendar is not expandable. I happen to go to Paris. I sometimes call him. It happens that it is the opposite. But please, don’t simply reduce this to a budgetary and presence problem when we know well that his missions also call him elsewhere », replied Jean-Marc Verchère.
