Young people will be able to choose their subscription from the titles of the regional and local Friborg press which appear at least once a week. In accordance with the media habits of young audiences, priority is given to digital subscriptions.

Awareness action

A subscription to the print newspaper is only granted if a digital option is not available, the release said. Young people who reach the age of majority in 2024 have the opportunity to subscribe to the subscription, regardless of the day of their birthday.

Concretely, a person who celebrated their 18th birthday in January can now subscribe to the subscription, just like someone who was born in August, for example. Subscriptions are thus digital for titles like Freedom, La Gruyere where the Freiburger Nachrichten.

Three titles, however, do not offer a digital offer: The Republican (Estavayer-le-Lac), the Murtenbieter (Morat) and theAnzeiger von Kerzers (Kyers). The service follows the adoption in March by the Grand Council of the law on young people’s access to the media.

The intention of the measure is to raise awareness among young people of regional and cantonal issues, and to indirectly support the titles of the regional press. The law was accepted by 79 votes to 13 with 1 abstention, not without criticism.
