15,000 books for euro: the bargain of the next big clearance sale
Descriptive text here

We explain to you how the next clearance sale organized by the Yonne departmental media library in Saint-Georges-sur-Baulche, on Saturday May 4, 2024, has an economic interest, but not only that.

It is an event that brings together a large crowd of bibliophiles, all generations combined. The big sale of the departmental media library returns on Saturday May 4, 2024, at the socio-cultural center of Saint-Georges-sur-Baulche.

All works for just euro

No less than 15,000 books, comics and CDs will be on sale at the single price of one euro. The interest of the event is clearly economic. But not only. It also allows us to give a second life to works that have lived a little and to facilitate the purchase of second-hand items rather than new items. With this low price, the aim is to make these documents very accessible.

Les Grands Récits: a new festival at Saint-Germain Abbey

The organizers are expecting a “big rush. It’s the third edition, but the sale already has its audience”, confides Alice Klein, deputy head of department of the departmental media library. The 2022 edition brought together 1,800 people over a weekend, including 1,300 on Saturday alone. For the May 4 event, there will be plenty to choose from. “These works were no longer intended to be found in a library. We remove from collections those which have been borrowed a lot and which have natural wear and tear. Also those whose contents are a little out of date, notably children’s documentaries.”

“The idea is to have a certain virtuous circle”

In 2022, 15,200 of the 22,000 works offered for sale had found a buyer. Unsold items from the clearance sale will not end up in the trash. They will be offered at Ammaréal, an online second-hand bookstore which donates part of the sale price of each book to charitable organizations. “The idea is to have a certain virtuous circle,” explains Alice Klein.

With this sale, the departmental media library is finally able to extend the life of thousands of books. “It’s ultimately rare that our books end up in ruins. We have to hover around only 5%.”

One in three bookstores could close due to European harmonization: “If this measure passes, it will be death”
