“Made in Morocco” trains: Morocco reveals its ambitions

The Morocco TraIndustry (MTI) cluster, born from the desire to develop a national railway industry, was highlighted during the 14th edition of InnoTrans, the largest global exhibition dedicated to mobility and rail transport, which is taking place from September 24 to 27 in Berlin.

During its first participation in this international event, MTI was able to present its ambitions and projects to professionals in the German and international railway industry on the stand reserved for it.

Created in 2021, this new cluster in the Moroccan railway industry aspires to become a key player in this strategic sector for the Kingdom. The main objective of the cluster is to bring together the different industrial players in the railway sector around a complete national ecosystem, similar to those already established in the automobile and aeronautics sectors, declared its president, Mohammed Smouni.

“Ultimately, the cluster aims to produce ‘Made in Morocco’ trains and export them,” confided Smouni, member of the Moroccan delegation present at InnoTrans 2024, led by Mohamed Rabie Khlie, director general of the National Office of Railways (ONCF).

Smouni, who is also deputy director general of ONCF, explained that Morocco, with its experience in the automobile and aeronautics sectors, where it is already recognized for its competitiveness, also has a significant potential to position itself as a major player in the railway industry.

MTI’s participation in InnoTrans 2024 aims to promote Morocco’s ambitious railway development plan. This presence marks a turning point for the growth of the cluster and also aims to attract foreign investors while highlighting the know-how of Moroccan companies internationally, he assured.

Thus, the MTI cluster intends to boost investments in the railway sector and create an integrated national ecosystem, with a strong technological component. This ecosystem, which brings together both public and private operators, aims to generate added value both economically and socially.

In the years to come, this Moroccan ecosystem should strengthen the competitiveness of the railway sector and its export capacities. The cluster already counts among its members large Moroccan and international manufacturers and subcontractors, such as Alstom, as well as SMEs, startups specializing in different mobility professions, universities and research centers.
