Scam: fake advisors are increasingly rampant in
Scam: fake bank advisors are increasingly rampant in France
(France 2)

Bank account scams are becoming more and more widespread in France, with damage estimated at 340 million euros in 2023. Spotlight on fake bank advisors in telephone scams.

The scam always starts with a call. The bank number is displayed and a man claiming to be your bank advisor is on the line. Behind this interlocutor hides a crook ready to do anything to empty his victim’s bank account. Leslie Cardot was alerted by a fake bank advisor that her account had been hacked. So that he can counter fraud, he asks him to validate purchases. Gaining confidence and taking things by surprise, she executes. The crooks took 1,500 euros from the young woman, but she is far from being the only victim.

“These people are very good at mental manipulation”, assures Anthony Schmit, also victim of a scam. Their real bank won’t reimburse them. It evokes serious negligence, because customers must absolutely check who their interlocutor is. Centho, a scammer hunter and Twitch videographer explains that to imitate the victim’s bank number, scammers reproduce the phone server. Fraud involving fake advisors is experiencing a dizzying increase: 78% additional cases have been recorded in one year by cybermalveillance.gouv.fr.
