GRAND FORKS, BC — The evacuation alert in Grand Forks in southern British Columbia has been downgraded to an advisory as an out-of-control wildfire in Washington state spreads north and continues to threaten to cross the border.

The Kootenay Boundary Regional District says its residents must be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice as the Goosmus fire continues to pose a risk to life and safety.

The evacuation notice, issued late Wednesday, covers the area west of Highway 41 and south of Highway 3, as well as properties west of Highway 3 between Sleepy Hollow and Phoenix streets.

Emergency Info BC advises anyone under evacuation notice to review their emergency plans and prepare a grab bag.

The BC Fire Service’s dashboard shows the fire was discovered Wednesday and is about two square kilometres in size.

Mark Stephens, director of the district’s emergency operations center, said the situation is “evolving very quickly.”

“We ask everyone to remain vigilant and continue to consult our site for information,” he said in a statement.
