Idea for a walk: Port Racine, the smallest port in France and one of the most beautiful spots on the GR 23

Port Racine, in the Channel, is renowned for being one of the smallest ports in mainland France, if not the smallest.

Judge for yourself: its granite jetties, forming a quadrilateral, delimit an area of ​​eight acres, i.e. only 800 m². Only small boats can access it. These must not measure more than two meters wide and 5.50 meters long.

This tiny fishing port is located on the north coast of La Hague, at a place called Le Pont-des-Vaux, in Saint-Martin Cove.

Its name refers to a privateer

Did you know ? As the Cotentin Tourisme website recalls, “Port Racine owes its name to François-Médard Racine (1774-1817), one of the last corsairs who operated under Napoleon. François-Médard Racine settled at this location in 1813.”

The port was fortified and took its current form in 1870, then in 1886.

A beautiful panorama on the customs officers’ path

But Port Racine is not just the pleasure of a few local fishermen. It is also one of the most beautiful spots on the GR 223, or customs officers’ path, on the seafront. It is very popular with many hikers.

Jacques Prevert himself, who had bought a house in the surrounding area, in Omonville-la-Petite, was won over by Port Racine. It was one of his favorite places and we understand that!
