Morocco-: call for the installation of a green hydrogen pipeline with Europe
Descriptive text here

Reda Hamdoune, executive director of Nareva, a subsidiary of the Al Mada group, pleaded, during the Morocco- economic forum held Friday in Rabat, for the installation of a green hydrogen pipeline between Morocco and Europe with the support from France.

This hydrogen pipeline should make it possible to transport green hydrogen from Dakhla and transport it, at competitive prices, to the north of the Old Continent, crossing the entire Atlantic ridge, he indicated during a panel. on new development plans for renewable energies.

Along its path, this pipeline will also have to supply sections of Moroccan industry, before being connected, via the Maghreb-Europe Gasoduct (GME), to the European Union, which is itself in the process of building a backbone. (network) of 40,000 km of green hydrogen, he adds.

The manager of Nareva, however, specified that this transport infrastructure will require “considerable” investments, the estimate of which varies from 2.5 to 4 million dollars per kilometer, knowing that with a green hydrogen sector, Morocco will have to attract investments which will amount to billions of dollars.

To amortize these costs, Reda Hamdoune suggests linking this project to that of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, which crosses 13 African countries, also mentioning the “blending” solution, which would consist of mixing natural gas and green hydrogen in a same pipeline.

Green hydrogen, priority area of cooperation

As a reminder, green hydrogen is one of the key sectors in which France wishes to collaborate with Morocco, as declared, during the same forum, Bruno Le Maire, French Minister of Economy, Finance and Sovereignty industrial and digital.

Among the other energy sectors where the two countries will be able to cooperate, Reda Hamdoune cites the storage of green hydrogen, chemical terminals and sustainable mobility, noting that this is essential to succeed in the energy transition, transport representing nearly 40 % of final energy consumption.
