Swiss films occupy a central place in the programme of the 20th Zurich Film Festival, a city where two thirds of Swiss distributors and production companies are based, noted the artistic director of the Festival on Thursday afternoon in Lausanne.

Of the sixteen selected films, twelve are world premieres. Two are selected in the international fiction competition: “When we were sisters” by Lisa Brühlmann, with Lausanne actor Carlos Leal and “Les courageous”, shot in Valais, by Jasmin Gordon about the life of a single mother and her three sons, who struggle in poverty in a rich Switzerland.

In addition to the film “Les Courageux”, two selected films were shot in Valais, the result of an incentive policy, and two in eastern Switzerland. “Aim high – a race against the limits” documents the attempt to establish a new classic downhill run on the Matterhorn, a project around which the lobbies of tourism, skiing and the environmental movement clash.

“Tschugger – der lätscht fall” (Tschugger – the last case) is a humorous detective comedy that captures the particularities of Valais.

Ben Kingsley, Claes Bang, Jonathan Pryce and Rafe Spall star in “William Tell,” a tale of William Tell, who liberated Switzerland from Austrian rule in the 14th century. The fact that this film about a Swiss myth was shot in Italy strikes the ZFF’s artistic director. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
