The investigation into the tragic incident which cost the life of a Sanef employee on the evening of Tuesday 13 August at the A4 motorway toll in Saint-Avold has made significant progress.

That evening, two individuals driving a Citroën Berlingo in the - direction forced a toll barrier and knocked down an employee, who did not survive her injuries.

A judicial investigation was opened by the public prosecutor with the investigating judge of on August 21, followed on August 29 by the arrest of the passenger and co-perpetrator of the theft of this car, the theft which preceded the tragedy.

Indicted

In a press release published on Thursday, September 19, the Sarreguemines public prosecutor’s office announced that the wanted individual, the driver of the vehicle, who has been on the run in the Maghreb since the incident, surrendered spontaneously to the gendarmes of the Saint-Avold motorway squad on the morning of Tuesday, September 17.

The prosecution stated that this man, initially placed in judicial custody, was brought before the magistrate on Tuesday afternoon and charged with “the offences of group theft, involuntary vehicular manslaughter aggravated by a hit and run and the manifestly deliberate violation of a security obligation, endangering the lives of others and driving despite a suspended driving licence”.

Justice officials also said that “the suspect admitted to having driven the vehicle that caused the fatal accident, while specifying that he was not aware of hitting the employee when he forced his way through the toll booth.”

The accused was placed in provisional detention following his appearance before the judge of liberties and detention of the judicial court. The investigation, for its part, is continuing with a view to clarifying the sequence of events, “both before the accident and after it”.

Quest for truth

The judicial investigation has continued to follow its course since the beginning of September, the aim being to provide answers to the families and friends of the Sanef employee, who died at the age of 59. As part of the investigation, a European arrest warrant was issued, as well as an extradition request to Morocco, as the driver identified by investigators had initially fled to the Cherifian kingdom.
