Areas in southeastern Manitoba facing flooding

Many residents in southeastern Manitoba are facing flooding due to heavy rains that fell overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Stephen Berg, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says thunderstorms hit those areas Monday morning, bringing heavy rain.

He added that it started raining in some areas on Tuesday, but other communities received rain during the two days.

This is an incredible eventsaid Stephen Berg. This kind of event is expected every 120 to 130 years.

The rural municipality of Elma, which is located about 90 km east of Winnipeg, received 205 mm of rain in the last 36 hours and is the area most severely affected by the rain, according to the meteorologist.

The town of Steinbach received 156 mm of rain, causing flooding and some road closures on Tuesday.

The Rural Municipality of Hanover had to close some roads due to overflow, according to a notice posted on the municipality’s website Tuesday afternoon.

Hanover Warden Jim Funk says the rural municipality also received several reports of flooded basements Tuesday.

He added that some residents reported water reaching their waists as they walked through the streets in the northern part of the community.

Jim Funk says the rural municipality is providing pumps to residents to reduce the impact of flooding. It is also providing sandbags to residents at risk of flooding.

Stephen Berg says more rain is expected in southeastern Manitoba this week, with a chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday.
