Moroccan justice on Tuesday April 16 sentenced a man to the death penalty after finding him guilty of murdering a young student, a case that shook Moroccan public opinion.

“The court was convinced of the involvement of the main accused in this atrocious murder with premeditation”according to our sources which indicate that “individuals directly involved in the facts” were condemned at the same time.

The body of young Badr was found in the parking lot of an establishment of the multinational fast food company, mutilated. A car driven by the main accused hit him after a violent brawl.

Witnesses who were very close to the scene of the crime saw the vehicle rush at full speed into the square, where the victim was. The investigation led to the arrest of four people, sentenced to five, twenty, twenty-years in prison and life imprisonment respectively.

The death penalty is still in force in Morocco, but has not been applied since 1993. Fewer than 80 people sentenced to death were in prison at the end of 2023, according to the National Human Rights Council.
