A 20-year-old man lost his life following a fight in Athis-Mons, in Essonne, on Tuesday, September 3. The events are said to have taken place in the context of a rivalry between neighborhoods.

Two young people aged 18 and 19 have been charged, one with murder, after a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death on Tuesday in Athis-Mons (Essonne), the Evry prosecutor’s office said on Sunday 8 September, when contacted by AFP.

The “alleged perpetrator of the stabbing”, aged 18 according to the prosecution, was charged with murder, violence without total incapacity for work in a group and participation in a group with a view to committing violence or damage.

A judicial investigation was opened into these charges on Thursday.

He was detained “provisionally” pending a hearing on Tuesday regarding his placement in pre-trial detention, the prosecution added.

A second young adult, aged 19, was charged with group violence with a weapon and is a repeat offender, the source continued. He was placed in pre-trial detention.

The third person arrested, also aged 18, was placed under the status of assisted witness.

A rivalry between neighborhoods

According to initial findings from the investigation, this fight took place between young people from the neighbouring town of Draveil, who came from the historically rival districts of Mazières and Bergeries.

Two of the accused were arrested at the scene, with a third reporting to the police station after the incident.

The Essonne department accounts for a quarter of the brawls recorded in France, these clashes between young people against a backdrop of rivalry between neighbourhoods and often with obscure motives, several political leaders noted during a conference on the subject in April.
