Zakaria, 20, is a young quadriplegic man who is now stuck in his apartment because of an elevator breakdown linked to an act of vandalism.

During this Paralympic Games period, the question of accessibility for people with reduced mobility arises again. Zakaria, a 20-year-old quadriplegic, is now stuck in his apartment on the 8th floor of a residence in Lyon. For three months, the elevator has been out of order due to an act of vandalism.

A very difficult situation for the young man to live with. “It’s super complicated for me, it’s really hard, it’s awful,” Zakaria laments to BFMTV. For Zakaria’s mother, seeing her son cut off from the world is a real heartbreak. “We can’t go to the day hospital, even activities like disabled sports, he can’t go there,” Ghania laments.

“We don’t know what we can do”

Since the family moved into the building in 2022, the elevator has broken down several times. “Zakaria usually moves, he is autonomous. Now, we don’t know what we can do, really, we ask for help,” says Mohamed, the young man’s father.

Faced with this situation, the family has alerted the building manager several times. Vilogia announces that it has started the repair process, but has no information on the time frame for restoring service.

“Vilogia has made a ground floor studio available to Mr. Merbouh free of charge while the work is being carried out,” the social landlord told BFMTV. The entrance to the accommodation is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
