What are the most expensive student cities in France?

As students head back to school, here’s a ranking of the college towns with the highest cost of living.

For 20 years, UNEF has been analyzing the evolution of the costs of student life. An anniversary that the union is celebrating “with bitterness” this year, noting an “unprecedented increase in the cost of student life”, in a press release dated August 2024. The opportunity, once again, to establish the ranking of the most expensive student cities in France.

Paris and its region remain in the lead, La Rochelle breakthrough

Last year, students had to pay an average of €482 more than the previous year. A slightly lower increase than that of 2023, which was €595 more than in 2022, but which remains significant. This budget would be used, in large part, to pay the rent. On average, this represents a little more than 60% of the monthly expenses of students in France.

Unsurprisingly, Paris remains at the top of the ranking of university cities where the cost of living is the highest, with a monthly budget estimated at €1,563. The Paris region follows closely behind the capital, with, in order, Créteil, Saint-Denis, Nanterre and Guyancourt succeeding each other in the top 5. The fact remains that by going from Paris to Créteil, the 2 most expensive cities, this budget is reduced by almost €150.
