Launched in 2015 by the magazine of the same name, the prize Defector accompanies the literary rentrées of the fall and winter by awarding 9 prizes ranging from the best French novel to the best stage book, including the best Anglo-Saxon, Russian and Latin American novels. The most prestigious of these, the best French novel, went to Houris of Kamel Daoudpublished by Gallimard on August 15.
The book tells the story of Aube, a young, mute Algerian woman who returns to her native village, haunted by the ghosts of the civil war and the war of independence. Each page turns, holding our attention, carrying us away thanks to the lyrical breath of the heroine in her personal tragedy and that of an entire nation, delaying the end of life and history like Scheherazade and her thousand and one nights with the sultan. », écrit Sean Rose in our columns.
Present at this literary rentrée with The Enchanters (Rivages), the third part of Los Angeles Quintet, James Ellroy also received an Honorary Defector Award for his entire career.
The 9 prizes were awarded on the evening of August 28, in the Parisian bookstore Delamain.
Last year, the jury awarded its prize for the best French novel to Humus of Gaspard Koenig (Observatory editions) and The Third Hand d’Arthur Dreyfus (POL), ex aequo. The price Defector will then return in January 2025 to announce the winners of the winter intake.
