A universal language removed from the race
The movie A universal language by Canadian director Matthew Rankin, who was on the short list for the Oscar for best international film, ultimately did not find himself among the five finalists. Rather, we find I’m still here (Brazil), The young woman with the needle (Denmark), The seeds of the wild fig tree (Germany), Flow (Latvia) and Emilia Perez (France).
However, another Canadian film stood out in the best documentary film category, namely Sugarcane : the shadows of a boarding school by director Julian Noise BraveCat, originally from the Secwepemc Nation in British Columbia, and Toronto journalist Emily Kassie.
The feature film explores the heartbreak and rebuilding of a community after years of abuse and disappearances of children at a residential school on the Sugarcane reserve.
