The Louvre is in danger. In a confidential note dated January 13, Laurence des Cars, the president of the Louvre, calls on the Minister of Culture Rachida Dati. In this document, revealed by Le Parisien, this Wednesday, January 22, the boss of the largest museum in the world warns about the state of the building.
Among the elements that threaten the museum, the president lists a “multiplication of damage” in spaces “sometimes very degraded”or even “more waterproof”as well as “worrying temperature variations endangering the conservation of the works”. She also denounces the “physical test” what has become of the museum, visitors not having “no space for them to take a break.”. Not to mention “food or sanitary facilities”who are “in insufficient volume, well below international standards”.
The Louvre Pyramid “very mediocre”
The president of the Louvre also points to the Pyramid, which “reveals significant gaps” : “During very hot days, the greenhouse effect, created by the glass roof, makes this space very inhospitable for the public who pass through it and the agents who work there”she castigates again, deploring a space “very mediocre”. A situation that can no longer continue, as the museum welcomed no less than 8.7 million visitors in 2024.
-The call from the president of the museum went back to Emmanuel Macron. A close friend of the President of the Republic confirmed to our colleagues that “discussions are taking place between the presidency, the Ministry of Culture and the Louvre, and the Head of State intends to take up this matter soon”. For the moment, restoration and security work, as well as the creation of an additional entrance, to decongest the Pyramid, would be considered.
