Maes: exiled in Dubai, the rapper finally arrested in Morocco

The rapper Maesa key figure in the French music scene, was arrested Casablanca in Morocco, in a legal and media context that is troubling to say the least.

This arrest, which occurred shortly before the official visit of the French Minister of Justice, Gerald Darmaninin the Emirate of Dubai, raises several questions and highlights a complex legal case involving the rapper, based in Dubai since the end of 2022.

Maes: the rapper based in Dubai

Maes, real name Walid Georgeyis one of the most popular rappers on the French music scene. With titles like “Godmother” or “Djana” and collaborations with artists like Booba or Childhe has established himself as a leading figure in French rap in recent years.

However, his music career took an unexpected turn when reports surfaced of his leak towards Dubai. Since 2022, the artist had in fact settled in the United Arab Emirates, according to him, to escape racketeering attempts and threats to his life in his neighborhood.

I left for Dubai after vehicles from my music video were burned by people jealous of my city […]. They tried to extort me, I said to myself, but, usually, it's me who does that to people (laughs)” he declared in February 2023 in the columns of the magazine Generations.

An arrest in Casablanca

Although Maes had been living peacefully in Dubai for two years, he was nevertheless the subject of an international arrest warrant, having failed to appear in court in October 2023. The rapper was to be tried there for violence in a meeting, after having assaulted punching a man as he left a studio in September 2018 in . Despite this absence, he was therefore sentenced to 10 months in prison, a sentence he never served.
