The Vendéen Paul-Émile Pajot exhibited in 100 years ago. Discovery

Recognition of his art

Author of around 4,000 pictorial works during his life, the Vendée artist primarily sells his paintings to his sailor friends. Gradually, Paul-Émile Pajot will make a name for himself beyond this circle. He was particularly noted by painters such as Albert Marquet and Jean Launois.

On January 22, 1925, just 100 years ago, his so-called “naïve” painting achieved national recognition. Indeed, that day takes place the opening of his Parisian exhibition where 17 of his works are exhibited at the Pierre gallery, rue Bonaparte. Highlight: the exhibition catalog is prefaced by Jean Cocteau!

From this period, the Vendéen devoted himself more to pictorial art (he is also known for his talents as a poet and singer). The success is growing and orders are pouring in from all over . A short-lived success since on September 18, 1929, almost 4 years after his first successes, the artist Chaumois fell on the steps of his house. He, who suffered from a lung condition, was seriously injured during this fall and died the next day.
