In Canada, the province of Alberta refuses to form a united front against Donald Trump

Donald Trump did not act on the first day of his second term to impose 25% taxes on Canadian and Mexican imports, a promise reiterated since November 25. But, in the evening, Monday January 20, he announced that he intended to start them from January 1is FEBRUARY. The new American president also asked federal agencies, in a memo cited by Reuters, to “tackle the unfair trade and monetary practices of other nations”.

In response, this Tuesday, January 21, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, reiterated that the Canadian response would be “robust” and that the goal is to get rid of these tariffs “as quickly as possible”. He also reiterated the strong ties that unite the two economies, and suggested that if Donald Trump really wants a new “golden age” of America, it will need Canadian resources.

For almost two months, the Canadian government has been seeking the appropriate response to the Republican's probable attacks. Last week, Ottawa further refined the list of American products that could be affected by a first response, if Donald Trump triggers a trade war. And Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, wore a blue cap, a response to the famous red one emblazoned with the slogan « MAGA » from the American president, where we could read: “Canada is not for sale. »
