Culture Minister Rachida Dati announced an ambitious plan to support French cabarets. Discover the key measures aimed at promoting this emblematic part of our cultural heritage, threatened but oh so precious…
It is in the legendary setting of the Moulin Rouge that Rachida Dati, Minister of Culture, chose to present her battle plan to save French cabarets. A true institution of our heritage, the cabaret is today weakened. The minister intends to restore its letters of nobility.
475,000 euros to support creation
At the heart of the measures announced, a budget of 475,000 euros dedicated to supporting creation. The objective: to give a helping hand to the artists to renew the costumes, sets and choreographies. Because to continue to make people dream, the cabaret must constantly reinvent itself.
Rachida Dati understood this well. She was able to see the extent of the know-how during her visit to the Moulin Rouge workshops:
From styling to featherwork to choreography, there is an entire ecosystem of talent that revolves around the cabaret. It is essential to preserve and pass on these artistic crafts.
A fund for young talents
150,000 euros will be devoted to a fund to help develop “characters” and acts for young artists. The idea is to encourage the emergence of new talents by giving them the means to achieve their creative ambitions.
Cabaret residences
Another flagship measure: the establishment of “cabaret residencies” in multidisciplinary places or art centers, to the tune of 75,000 euros. The opportunity for artists to experiment with new formats and reach new audiences.
A “Focus cabaret” at 200,000 euros
The 2025-2026 season will be punctuated by events, shows and even a podcast dedicated to cabaret, for a total budget of 200,000 euros. Enough to shine the spotlight on this unique art form.
Towards recognition of intangible heritage
Beyond financial support, Rachida Dati wishes to bring cabaret into the prestigious circle of intangible cultural heritage. In particular, it will support the candidacy of the cancan, an emblematic dance, for the national inventory.
-Cabaret is an integral part of French identity. It is an art of living, a unique know-how in the world that we must cherish and promote.
– Rachida Dati, Minister of Culture
Research and publications in the spotlight
To establish this recognition, an envelope of 50,000 euros will finance research and publications on the history and behind the scenes of cabarets. Enough to further expand their aura.
Passing on passion to younger generations
Preserving this heritage also involves transmission. Cabaret crafts (costumes, boot makers, feather workers, etc.) will be highlighted among young people and aspiring creators.
A vital sector for employment
With 200 establishments, 5,000 jobs including 1,600 artists, and 225 million euros in turnover, the cabaret sector should not be neglected. A whole section of the cultural economy will benefit from this support plan.
By giving color to the neon lights of the cabaret, Rachida Dati hopes to rekindle the flame of a living art. Feathers, sequins and French cancan: the show continues!
Cabarets in figures
To measure the importance of the sector, here are some key figures:
- 200 cabarets in France
- 5,000 direct jobs including 1,600 artists
- 225 million euros in annual turnover
- 2.7 million spectators each year
- 3.5 million euros in public aid in 2024
Figures that make you dizzy, like a dancer twirling on stage. The cabaret has not said its last word.
