Def Leppard opens 2025 without Vivian Campbell, replaced by John Zocco during a concert in León

On January 18, 2025, Def Leppard held their first concert of the year at the Feria Estatal De León, Mexico. However, fans noticed the absence of guitarist Vivian Campbell, who is currently undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

A talented replacement for a special evening

Before playing Foolin’Joe Elliott, lead singer of Def Leppard, took the stage to explain Campbell’s absence: “Vivian Campbell cannot be with us tonight. He is recovering from his cancer treatment. So say hello to the man who is filling in for him tonight, Mr. John Zocco.”

John Zocco, Phil Collen’s guitar technician and experienced guitarist, took over. Well known for his work with many rock and country artists, he was able to blend into the energy of the group to offer a memorable show.

The fight continues for Vivian Campbell

Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2013, Vivian Campbell has never hidden her fight against the disease. In an interview with the podcast Lymphoma Voices in 2023, he said: “There is no shame in having cancer or having visible signs of treatment. It allowed me to focus on the essence of who I am as a musician.”

Campbell continued to perform with the band despite his treatments, showing admirable resilience. However, adjustments are sometimes necessary to preserve your health.
