From 2026, it will be necessary to respect very precise ecological specifications to be able to participate in London Fashion Week. This is what the British Fashion Council has just announced, following the model of Copenhagen Fashion Week.
London becomes the first of the “Big Four” to commit to sustainability
This is an announcement that could shake up the lineup for the next Fashion Week across the Channel. From now on, to participate as a brand in London fashion week, you will have to satisfy certain sustainability requirements. Among the new rules imposed: not include any items made of fur, skins or feathers in its collections, not destroy unsold items, guarantee the longevity of its clothes, and not offer any single-use plastic. Of the social criteria will also be required, such as encouraging diversity in hiring, particularly for management positions.
Strict measures which will take effect from January 2026 and which will only concern brands wishing to join the official London Fashion Week calendar for the first time.
-“This is an important step and demonstrates our desire for sustainable development to be an integral part of the future of fashion. Together, we create a framework which allows emerging companies to lead the way and make a concrete contribution to making the industry more sustainable and more responsible”said Caroline RushCEO of the British Fashion Council in a press release.
London Fashion Week becomes like this the first of “Big Four”which includes New York, Milan and Paris, to commit so vigorously to ecology and sustainability. However, the initiative is not hers: these specifications are borrowed from the Fashion Week de Copenhague which has been imposing these rules since 2023 already.
What about the impact on Paris Fashion Week? After this announcement, the pressure is increasingly intense on the organizers of Paris fashion week. To preserve their image, will they follow the current eco trend?
