Moana 2 exceeds $1 billion in global box office revenue

The animated film from Disney Studios is the third feature film of 2024 to reach this symbolic bar, behind Vice-Versa 2 et Deadpool & Wolverine.

Disney welcomes a new billionaire to its roster. With nearly $445 million in revenue in the United States and another $567 million overseas, Vaiana 2 has exceeded the symbolic mark of a billion dollars in global box office revenue, reports Variety . The animated blockbuster thus becomes the third film of 2024 to garner so much money, behind two other Disney productions, Vice-Versa 2 (1.7 billion revenues worldwide) and Deadpool & Wolverine (1.3 billion revenues worldwide).

With this performance, the second part of the saga Vaiana surpasses its predecessor Vaiana, The Legend of the End of the World which, in 2016, had accumulated some $700 million at the global box office. And ranks among the nine films that have exceeded the billion-dollar revenue mark since the pandemic.

Abroad, Vaiana 2 can thank its French audience which brought in no less than 61.2 million dollars in revenue. But also the United Kingdom ($50.5 million), Germany ($43.1 million), Australia ($30.9 million) and Japan ($30.7 million). In the United States, the film surfed the Thanksgiving period, as well as the Christmas period where it was able to resist the arrival in cinemas of Sonic 3 : The Movie et Mufasa : The Roi Lion .

Disney can congratulate itself on not having released Vaiana 2 only on streaming platforms, which was their initial project. Because the public responded to the cinema, and this creative shift could make Vaiana 232e Disney production to exceed one billion in revenue, one of the ten most profitable animated films of all time even though its budget was only $150 million. It is currently still being released in theaters and could thus break new records. Its arrival on the platforms was also announced by Disney.
