A “Tintin in America” autographed by Hergé sold for 191,000 euros

This 1932 album, published by Petit Vingtième, is a priori the only one known from its edition, with the mention « 10e mille ».

On December 5, 1933, Hergé signed a very personal dedication to one of his friends and mentors, Charles Helsen, the scout chaplain of the Saint-Boniface Institute in Brussels, the establishment where he spent five years of his schooling.

“To Father Helsen, in memory of the good years spent under his direction, discovering Adventure, in the forest of Soignes… the Alps and the Pyrenees… Besides, Tintin is just another me -even who would have continued on this path, to the fullest…”writes the author.

The collection of Felipe Ortiz-Patiño at auction

This rarity belonged to Felipe Ortiz-Patiño, a discreet collector from a dynasty born from his Bolivian great-grandfather Simon Iturri Patiño, who made his fortune by discovering an immense tin deposit in 1900.

Felipe Ortiz-Patiño separated from this collection, started around thirty years ago, to devote himself to other interests such as cars. Of the 75 lots, 48 were awarded, for a total of more than 934,000 euros, Tajan said.

A copy in perfect condition of the first edition of “Tintin in the Congo” from 1931, among the few thousand printed at the time, went for 101,944 euros. It is signed « Tintin » by Hergé, and “Dear” by his fiancée Germaine.

One of the 500 albums of “head draw” (for buyers who have pre-ordered) “Tintin in the Land of the Soviets” in 1930 was sold for 63,715 euros. Thanks to their exceptional state of freshness for original editions, “The Crab with the Golden Claws” (1942) et “The Broken Ear” (1937) were sold for 45,874.80 euros and 44,600.50 euros respectively.

Tintin, still a super star

Tintin is the comic book hero who most freaks out the auction house counters, thanks to his worldwide notoriety. The record is the design of a cover project of the “Blue Lotus” in 1936, never used, and sold in 2021 for 3.175 million euros.

Tajan put up for sale a few weeks later an original board of “The Mysterious Star” in black and white, dating from 1941. Estimate: 400,000 to 500,000 euros. This did not find a buyer.
