Margaret Qualley explains how The Substance’s prosthetics ‘messed up’ her face

Let’s applaud warmly Margaret Qualleywho has just obtained his entry into the Club of actors who have made extreme and lasting physical changes for a role. Typically, these actors are men who gained a lot of weight to play a superhero or who lost a lot of weight to play the lead role in an Oscar-winning film. But what about Qualley, who sacrificed his skin for a year to The Substance?

The actress participated in the podcast Happy Sad Confused in January and admitted that the prosthetics she wore in The Substance damaged her skin so much that at the end of filming, they had to find ways to avoid filming her face: “At the end, when they film my skirt at the beginning of the credits, and there are palm trees all around, it’s just because my face was so fucked up they couldn’t film my face anymore,” Qualley said.

Margaret Qualley said she suffered from acne for about a year, including when she began filming for her next project, Kinds of Kindness, in which she plays four characters. “You know, the character who has all that acne? It was just my acne from the dentures, she said. And I was like, “Oh, that’s kind of perfect.” I’m playing all these different characters – for one of them we’ll be using all my acne prosthetics. It took me a year to physically recover from all of this. »

An actor who damages his skin for a film about impossible beauty standards in Hollywood? And who then uses that acne to feed a character in another movie? This is a method of acting on a level that male actors have not even dreamed of. Well done.
