King Philippe and Queen Mathilde receive the leaders of European institutions for the New Year

New Year receptions continue for King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. This Thursday, the King and Queen of the Belgians received at the royal palace in Brussels the leaders of European institutions, including Roberta Metsola, as well as permanent representatives accredited to the European Union.

King Philippe of Belgium, 64, and Queen Mathilde, 51, have a series of New Year receptions. Like every year, sovereigns greet officials, leaders and representatives of different national and international institutions on the occasion of the New Year. This Thursday, January 16, it was the turn of the leaders of the European institutions to greet the King and Queen of the Belgians at the Royal Palace.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde received the leaders of the European institutions based in Brussels and the permanent representatives accredited to the European Union. Before the reception, King Philippe received in audience his main guests, namely, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, and the President of the European Council Antonio Costa. The Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bernard Quintin, was also present.

Maltese Roberta Metsola has led the European Parliament since January 2022. Aged 45, Roberta Metsola has spent her entire career in the European institutions. As soon as she finished her law studies in Malta, she continued her studies at the College of Europe in Belgium and joined the group of young European democratic students. She was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2013. Antonio Costa was still the Portuguese Prime Minister last year. After the end of his mandate, he moved closer to the European institutions and was chosen as the new president of the European Council in December 2024.
