For today’s interview column, a flight above the meanders of the L’Assomption River, in the heart of the municipality of the same name, in the Lanaudière region, northeast of Montreal. This photo was taken in the summer of 2024.
The L’Assomption River is known for its winding course. Indeed, its numerous curves give it a total length of 160 km, while it only travels 40 km in a straight line from its source to the St. Lawrence River.
“We could never really perceive the extraordinary geography of the territory of the town of L’Assomption, except from the sky,” says Pierre Lahoud.
“Like many other towns in Quebec and around the world, L’Assomption is located near a river,” indicates the historian and author. Here, a sector of the city was built on a small almost-island, surrounded by the meanders of the river. It makes it look quite charming from the air!”
“In the past, the residents of the First Nations who inhabited these places at the time nicknamed this river Outaragauesipia word which in French means “the tortuous”. With good reason, as we see very clearly here,” he says.

“This is the advantage of aerial photography: it sometimes allows us to understand how the territory develops, how a city is created, how the most beautiful places in Quebec take shape,” concludes Pierre Lahoud.
