“The Walking Dead” is one of my favorite shows of all time. Although it had a few missteps near the end, it will always hold a special place in my heart. I have naturally followed each of the spin-offs of this post-apocalyptic universe and I can say with certainty that “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” stands out from the rest. Good news: it just arrived on Netflix today (January 13) for American audiences.
Last July, AMC struck a deal with the popular streaming service to add 13 shows to its catalog, including other “Walking Dead” spin-offs like “Fear the Walking Dead” and “Daryl Dixon.” This partnership is part of AMC’s broader strategy, and we can expect even more content (although “Dead City” isn’t available on Netflix yet).
I admit, my opinion may be a little biased when it comes to “Walking Dead” spin-offs. However, if someone were to ask me to recommend just one spin-off, I would shout “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.” What particularly appealed to me was the return of an iconic character, Rick Grimes, but above all the fact that the series offers fans an emotional love story, something never seen before in “The Walking Dead ”.
So if you’ve stopped watching “The Walking Dead” following its disappointing final seasons or haven’t seen this spinoff yet, here’s why it’s imperative to watch “The Ones Who Live” now that it’s is available on Netflix.
De quoi parle “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” ?

“The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” is a six-episode miniseries that follows Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira)’s efforts to find each other after years of separation. Michonne’s final appearance on “The Walking Dead” shows her searching for Rick, who had been presumed dead by those close to him, but who turns out to be alive and kidnapped by a mysterious group.
This spin-off fills in the blanks by exploring the evolution of the characters and what they mean to each other in this new reality. Along the way, they begin to heal from their shared traumas while trying to escape a dangerous organization that threatens their future.
‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’ is an emotional story worth discovering
The reason I recommend watching “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” lies in the story itself. Fans already know that Rick and Michonne are extremely solid, well-developed characters who don’t need any introduction (unlike some other spin-offs where the characters seem flat or irritating). What sets this miniseries apart is its focus on their reunion, which offers a powerful love story in such a dark world. Furthermore, this makes sept It’s been years since we last saw Rick, and his disappearance remains one of the biggest mysteries.
This is what made “The Ones Who Live” so special to me. It stands out from other spin-offs, which often rely on the familiar trope of fighting yet another other evil group. This spin-off, on the other hand, puts Rick and Michonne front and center, exploring the lines they will cross to find each other. It’s an emotional journey from start to finish.
-The series wastes no time rehashing what happened to Rick after he was kidnapped by a mysterious organization known as CRM. We see that after many failed escape attempts, he was forced to accept his new reality. As a prisoner, Rick spent six years working on the outskirts of Philadelphia and then took a role helping build a CRM operational base. From there, we learn more about his traumatic past, with an entire episode dedicated to Michonne searching for clues about his whereabouts and meeting new people along the way.
I’m pleased that “The Ones Who Live” doesn’t waste time dragging out Rick and Michonne’s reunion. Instead, the focus is on how they move forward together, facing new threats and Rick’s battle with panic attacks. We see how the years apart have affected them as individuals, which is both poignant to watch and rewarding for the development of these characters.
If you’re worried about missing the action and horror, don’t be. It’s still a “Walking Dead” spin-off, and it fulfills its promises on that level. Fortunately, the series avoids the visual errors sometimes found in the franchise, instead providing a polished and thrilling experience. Between intense shootouts and classic zombie mayhem, there’s more than enough action to fill the quieter moments of Rick and Michonne’s powerful love story.

In short, this miniseries seems to offer not only an exciting sequel to a beloved saga, but also a deeper exploration of the characters. This begs the question: to what extent can a story evolve based on the lived experiences of the characters and viewers? A reflection which, undoubtedly, could inspire enriching exchanges.
