the director of the film “The Animal Kingdom” met the students of Cantau high school

This meeting, organized by philosophy professor Christophe Puyou, is part of the national “High school students and cinema apprentices” system. Led by the CNC, it is part of the policy of raising awareness and artistic education for young audiences with the aim of establishing the foundations of a cinematographic culture for these adolescents.

A telling story

The film, released in theaters in October 2023, tells the story of a father and his son affected by an epidemic of genetic mutation which gradually transforms individuals into animals. In a society that struggles to control these “creatures”, the adolescent tries to find his place, confronted with his own mutation and the rejection of others.

Around a hundred students were able to ask their questions after having previously viewed the feature film. “The film evokes the flight of a child towards his own destiny. It’s something that speaks to us at our age,” says Marylou as she leaves the room. A final year student, she also wishes to take hers after obtaining her baccalaureate.

These are the sources of inspiration which were the first elements questioned by the young people. In a non-exhaustive list of cinematographic universes, the director mentioned that of “Black Hole” by Gary Nelson, which tells of the spread of an illness among high school students, or that of the Japanese Miyazaki with “his foray of the fantastic into the real “.

Social metaphor

“It’s interesting to get feedback from the younger generations, to know what interests them,” explains Thomas Cailley. I remember that at their age, I was able to interact with directors and that was important for me. Here, I especially felt that it was the message of the film that caught their attention. » In the film, various societal aspects are addressed through the boy’s transformation.

“Here, I question this society, which, through so-called empathy, wants to cure individuals of illness, but which ends up completely excluding them. It is also a double metaphor. That of the intimate, with the fact of becoming someone else, and of our society which must learn to build itself with different species,” explains the director to the assembly.
