Unlike minimalism, which has made the adage “less is more” a real mantra, maximalism is a style of decoration that values the accumulation of furniture, objects, plants, books, etc.

A wall covered in artwork, punchy wallpaper patterns, or a room painted in bright colors are all examples of maximalism.

There have been periods in the history of art and design when maximalism was very prominent; during the Victorian era, for example, with the fashion for curiosity cabinets.

“More is better”

Contrary to popular belief, maximalist decor is not the result of improvisation. Creating a maximalist space requires as much time and effort as any other decorative style. You have to take your time. A good way is to build your decor layer by layer, evaluating the result each time you add elements. In short, you have to dare, but constantly reevaluate the shot. A good trick is to take photos.

The colors

Colors are the soul of maximalist decor. Decide whether you want warm tones, like reds, oranges, and yellows, or cool blues and greens. Choose a color palette that includes a main color and accent colors, and stick to your original plan for a structured result. Choose cheerful hues that you really love (less chance of regrets!).

Consider painting all the walls. Don’t forget the ceiling, it’s like a wall in a maximalist universe.

The finishes, the patterns

The maximalist style loves glossy finishes, like lacquered or varnished furniture, and fabrics in a beautiful variety of caressing textures like velvet.

When it comes to patterns, you can be bold by combining an animal print with a botanical pattern, but you should avoid combining two patterns of the same nature that are not proportional, or two fabrics that are too opposite. For example, you would not put two striped patterns together, and especially not a luxurious silk with a cheap cotton.

Stars

The maximalist style allows for extravagant, stylish furniture and objects, objects that catch the eye. However, you should limit yourself: between two and four strong elements per room. As for decorative objects, on the coffee table, on a console, you should avoid the cluttered look. Limit yourself to elements that have an interest (design, historical, nostalgic, etc.).

It’s easier to adopt the maximalist style with bold colors. Straight out of the 70s, primary or bright colors embody the maximalist palette: vibrant shades of red, yellow, blue, green, but also brown, purple. These are shades that recall the disco era, the overloaded velvet decors, the bohemian atmospheres.
