London’s National Gallery forced to open all night following success of Van Gogh exhibition

Since September 14, more than 280,000 people have already visited the exhibition Van Gogh : Poets and Lovers. To manage this large crowd, the London museum has therefore decided to welcome the public at night from January 17 to 18, to mark the end of this event.

The Vincent Van Gogh exhibition at the National Gallery will remain open all night from January 17 to 18, for the last weekend of this very successful event, the London museum announced on Thursday. More than 280,000 people have already visited l’exposition Van Gogh : Poets and LoversVan Gogh : poets and lovers ), which started on September 14 and will end on January 19. This places it as the third most successful paid exhibition at the National Gallery.

It is devoted to the work of the Dutch painter between February 1888 and May 1890, two years that he spent in the south of , in and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. More than 60 works are presented, including Starry Night as well as two Sunflowers or even The Lullaby.

All tickets had already been sold for the last few days. Tickets for the night of January 17 went on sale Thursday morning, and the midnight and 12:30 a.m. slots quickly sold out. « Our visitors will have the rare and special opportunity to experience Van Gogh’s paintings during the night and early morning hours »explained Gabriele Finaldi, director of the National Gallery.

They will follow in the footsteps « of artists such as (Lucian) Freud, (Francis) Bacon and (David) Hockney who came at these times to draw inspiration from the museum’s collection »added the director.
