Paris, a museum city, continues to reinvent itself. This year 2025, large institutions will finally reopen their doors after major work and others will turn off their lights, for a while, to get a makeover. Update on major cultural events in the capital.
Reopening of the Grand Palais and the Palais de la Découverte
It revealed itself little by little. First during the Paris Olympics, where it featured in the fencing events. It then amazed snow sports enthusiasts when it housed a giant ice rink… The largest glass roof in Europe will finally be returned to the public after a mammoth three-year project. The Grand Palais should reopen at the beginning of June 2025. Nestled in the Grand Palais, the Palais de la Découverte will also once again be accessible to the public. From June 6, 2025, an inaugural exhibition on artificial intelligence is already scheduled.
Closure of the Center Pompidou for five years
The Pompidou Center must close for five years for carrying out work. Since 2024, the establishment has been moving part of its important collection and the transfer should be completed in 2025.
The first closures to the public will take place at the beginning of 2025, with the performance hall then the museum and the library from March. The exhibition spaces will follow in the summer of 2025. The work will be the first major renovation of the site since its inauguration in 1977. It includes the removal of asbestos from the structure, as well as its compliance with safety, technical and energy standards. Estimated at 260 million euros, they will be financed by the State.
New coup for JR, in tribute to Christo
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the transformation of the Pont Neuf by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the street artist JR will transform the building into a cave. The project will see the light of day in September 2025. The building will then become a cave in the heart of Paris. Visible day and night, decorated with “large rock formations”, it will temporarily connect the two banks of Paris.
The golden age of the Palais Garnier
It celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2025. Throughout the year, the Palais Garnier will be in the spotlight through an exceptional program linked to its anniversary. Gala, conferences, guided tours… Fans of dance, lyrical art and heritage will be able to have a blast, and discover the legendary monument of the Paris Opera from top to bottom, before the two years of closure who await the Garnier stage: from 2027 to 2029, only public spaces will be accessible for visits, with major work planned on the stage cage.
Renaissance of the Gaveau room
A showcase dedicated to classical music, the Gaveau room begins a new chapter in its history. Bought on October 21, 2024 by businessman Jean-Marc Dumontet, at the head of five other theaters in Paris, the address beloved of music lovers since 1907 will host a more eclectic program from September 2025.
The year 2025 also promises great emotions with numerous concerts in the capital. Zaho de Sagazan (January), Lenny Kravitz and the Star Academy (March), Lionel Richie (June), 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake (July) will make their voices resonate in the major Parisian venues.
