Disney still reigns over the French box office with Mufasa : The Roi Lionmore Sonic 3 continues to follow him.
If the North American box office fell in 2024 compared to previous years (apart from the two years of Covid), Disney certainly came out a big winner after several monster successes: Vice-Versa 2 (1.6 billion at the worldwide box office including 650 million at home), Deadpool & Wolverine (1.3 billion including 636 million at the national box office) and Vaiana 2 (soon to be one billion worldwide, including 427 million in North America).
In France, cultural exception obliges (no), it is however French productions which have risen to the top of the French box office, A Little Something Extra et Le Comte de Monte Cristoeven if Pixar was right behind with Vice-Versa 2.
However, it is indeed a film from the company with big ears, Mufasa : The Roi Lionwhich topped the weekly rankings at the end of December. And this is not not the transition to the year 2025 which dislodged it from first place on the podiumeven with the arrival of Sonic 3 which has nevertheless surpassed it in the United States.
THE LION KING
For its third week of operation in France, Mufasa : The Roi Lion recorded more than 986,000 admissions, bringing its total to 3.5 million (barely more than what the remake of the Lion King during its first week). If it suffers from the comparison and risks not matching its predecessor, which ended its run with 10 million admissions, Barry Jenkins’ prequel is holding up rather well in terms of audiences, only suffering a drop of 28%.
He is also more efficient than the majority of Disney remakes or spin-offs. So, he has already exceeded Cinderella et The Little Mermaid (1.7 million entries across their entire operation), but also Dumbo (2.3 million entries), Aladdin (2.5 million) and both Maleficent (2 and 2.7 million entries).
Moreover, Mufasa is already tied with Beauty and the Beast (3.5 million entries in total), which it will therefore exceed in the days to come. And he’s only a few crumbs behind The Jungle Book (3.7 million entries) which it will also catch up with very soon. Finally, it should go far enough to do as much, if not better than the first Alice in Wonderland (4.5 million entries in total).
Even if the loot is less, Mufasa is therefore indeed a great success.
-BOX AU FIST
This week again, the balance of power between Sonic 3 et Mufasa is reversed in France where the Disney was released a week before the new Jeff Fowler film. If Sony’s blue hedgehog is ahead of Disney’s spin-off by a few million dollars in North America, the latter has therefore a good head start on our side of the Atlantic. In fact, for its second week in theaters, Sonic is second in the ranking with 654,000 additional entries for 1.8 million entries in total.
For comparison, after two weeks of operation, the first Sonic was around 1.4 million admissions and the second film around 1.1 million, which marks an encouraging progression for the franchise which is preparing a fourth opus.
As for Vaiana 2, six weeks after its tidal wave release, the film retains third place from the weekly top that it already occupied last week. Disney’s sequel managed to bring in more than 556,000 additional spectators, which allows it to cross the milestone of 7.5 million tickets sold, far ahead of the 5.6 million for the first opus in 2016 and very, very far from the 2.8 million Wishthe previous studio classic.
COCORICO
For its launch, the comedy A bear in the Jura written, directed and performed by Franck Dubosc obviously could not compete with Disney or Sonic (which also benefit from many more copies). The film therefore came in fourth position with 452,000 admissions, a very nice score, much better than the start of the previous comedy Dog and Cat of which he was one of the headliners (314,000 admissions).
Same for the launches of Iron (271 000 entrées), Merry Christmas (101 658 entrées), 10 more days without mom (256,753 entries) or even The meaning of family (283,561 entries). To find an equivalent start, you have to go back to 2020 and the first part of 10 days without mom. As for the success of Dubosc as a director, who here signs his third feature film, it is more than the beginning of exploitation of Rumba life (151,000 entries), but much lower than that of Everyone standing (898 000 entrées).
Finally, fifth place in the ranking is occupied by another French film, A fanfarewhich therefore only lost one place compared to last week. The comedy by Emmanuel Courcol with Benjamin Lavernhe and Pierre Lottin is holding on for its sixth week of operation with a total of 1.8 million admissions (including 243,000 in the last week).
Even if its number of copies decreases, the film only records an 18% drop in attendance. It remains to be seen whether it will still be able to hold out with the arrival on January 15 of Babygirl with Nicole Kidman, but also Wolf Man by Leigh Whannell, from the new Fabrice Du Welz The Maldoror File or even the new Desplechin, Spectators!.
