In the slew of projects under development at Sony, the giant has added yet another objective to accomplish: to produce an adaptation of this franchise whose success must be capitalized on.
PlayStation Productions is significantly expanding its reach in film and television, as revealed at CES 20251. The studio, which has already seen great success with adaptations like the Uncharted and Gran Turismo films, as well as The Last of Us on HBO is set to bring more PlayStation franchises to the big and small screens. A decision that demonstrates Sony’s strong desire to leverage its popular gaming properties by transposing them into new media. Among the most notable announcements features the live-action film adaptation of Helldivers. The game, a multiplayer shooter experience where players fight for Super Earth, will be brought to the screen by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The film is expected to capture the action and comedic moments of the game, while creating an original story within the established universe. The game’s satirical political tone has been compared to Starship Troopers and Fallout. Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, said of the film:
“While we look forward to what’s next, I’m excited to announce that we’re working with Sony Pictures to develop a film adaptation of our incredibly successful PlayStation game Helldivers 2. »
Helldivers II, released in February 2024, is a third-person shooter where players fight for “the democracy and freedom of Super Earth.” The title sold 12 million copies in three months and is available on PS5 and PC.
Other Sony projects
Meanwhile, a new trailer for The Last of Us season 2 was also revealed, with a release window set for April 2025. The trailer starred Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. Other projects in the works include a Horizon: Zero Dawn film which will tell Aloy’s origin story, and an Until Dawn film scheduled for April 2025, which will introduce a new story and new characters. A Ghost of Tsushima anime series is also in production by Crunchyroll, scheduled for release in 2027. PlayStation Productions is also working on a God of War television series for Prime Video, as well as a second season of the Twisted Metal series. With all of these projects in development, PlayStation fans have plenty to look forward to in the years to come.
