Montmartre Museum
The Montmartre museum invites you to rediscover the poet, a multifaceted artist: playwright, author of songs and surrealist collages. Along the way, Prévert’s poetic journey is retraced, but also his collaboration and sometimes his friendship with painters, sculptors and photographers. Impressive is his imagination which, through its magic, leads elsewhere. Through images as much as through words, he invented a personal world in which the omnipresent dream is the bearer of a singular universe and always imbued with humanity. Gifted with a boundless imagination, the discovery of surrealism was for him the opening to an eminently poetic, but also magical, world.
A tireless worker, Prévert has never stopped creating, creating unique surrealist collages which are inspired in particular by popular images. With an open mind, he was the friend of important and diverse artists: Picasso, Braque, Ernst, Miro and Chagall; he sometimes worked with them with four hands. But more often than not he produced very personal work. Prévert liked to say that he was educated among the Surrealists, he discovered with them another world which suited him perfectly and which he knew how to personalize with talent.
Is presented at the exhibition “Time and Spirit”, the title of one of his poems which he gave to a diary of his creation where the pages are decorated with joyfully colored flowers, a real poetic invention . Jacques Prévert fascinates with his imagination, sometimes inspired by the tales he read as a child but also by surrealism; he takes you into his world which enchants and disorients you; his works bear witness to this as “ Christ crucified », truculent.
A signed mobile that Calder had given to him and exhibited, testifies to the friendship of the two artists. And we find a certain closeness with this creator in front of the reconstruction of his office at the Cité Véron. This intimate portrait of Prévert, gifted in several fields, recalls the place he held in this period.
